General Artist Statement

Reece Stallwitz delves into the interplay between perspective and perception, exploring how everyday objects and seemingly mundane experiences carry personal meanings rooted in individual life stories. Her artistic lens is informed by her personal experiences, focusing on themes like sexuality, architecture, and the beauty of everyday life. Growing up in Texas and transitioning to life in New York for college has profoundly influenced her worldview, reinforcing how varied backgrounds can shift what individuals perceive as significant. Elements like buildings, songs, movies, clothing, and dancing represent different ideas depending on factors such as upbringing, environment, trauma, and personal values. Stallwitz’s work investigates how identity and background shape the meaning of these shared cultural elements, highlighting how even the smallest details can alter a narrative’s resonance for different people.

Working primarily with photography, painting, and mixed media, Stallwitz embraces the distinctive possibilities each medium offers. Photography captures fleeting moments, inviting viewers to interpret and find meaning in the details. Painting, on the other hand, allows for a more fluid and iterative process, where creative choices evolve through experimentation and feedback. Through her art, Stallwitz seeks to spark dialogue about the subjective nature of meaning and the universal yet deeply personal stories embedded in the everyday.
